This article aims to provide guidance on replacing and creating new names for cities and streets. Understanding this process is crucial for several reasons. We will explore the use of MapTiler Vector Data Editor and MapTiler Customize tools.

Common Reasons for Changing Names

  • A name could have been changed officially recently, and this change has not been populated in the various sources we are using, for example, OpenStreetMap.
  • You want to use fixed names across all languages.
  • You just want to make a funny map.

Step-by-Step Guide

Step 1: Create a New Dataset

As a first step, you will need to create a new dataset. This can be done directly in the Cloud by going to Data and starting a new dataset.

Step 2: Create a Data Point for City Label

The following video will showcase how you can create a data point with the name you want to have displayed on the map.

In the example, I have decided to create a new data point to replace the name of the city “Kopřivnice” with “Tatra City” as it is known for manufacturing famous Tatra trucks.

  1. Search for the city you want to rename.
  2. Change the basemap to either any of your custom maps or our standard maps; I have chosen Streets.
  3. Create a point over the label we will be replacing.
  4. Add a new property (name) and populate it with the desired name for our point (Tatra City).
  5. Save and publish the changes in the vector editor.
  6. You have prepared the data point with the new name.

Step 3: Add Data Point to the Map

In the cloud, go to Maps and choose the map you want to edit. In my case, I will be editing our base Streets style, but you can use any of your already made custom maps or any of our standard maps.

We are in our customize tool where you can style the map to fit your needs.

The following video will showcase how you can hide the original name and add the new layer with the data point we have created.

  1. Zoom to the location of the city we will be replacing.
  2. You can directly click on the label to open the specific layer.
  3. Then switch from Style to Data and click on the specific point to copy the “name” tag.
  4. You need to create a filter to hide the label for this specific name. To do that, click on add a filter and choose a name.
  5. Paste the name into the field and hit enter or click on +.
  6. Click on the green dot to make it red—this will hide the city with that name from our map.
  7. We will add our newly created data as a layer to our map.
  8. Press Alt+N or hit + in Layers.
  9. Search for the name we have saved the data point under, “Tatra City.”
  10. Choose the data and hit Continue.
  11. Select the Geometry. In this case, we are using Point followed by Visualization. As we want to see the name, we will choose Symbol. You can also add the name for the layer for better organizing.
  12. Now, you can style the layer manually or copy the style from the Town Layer (right-click and copy layer properties, then right-click on our new layer and paste style properties) to make it identical to the other city labels.
  13. What’s left to do is to save and publish the map.

Congratulations, you have now successfully changed the name of the city.

Street Name

We can use the same process for the entire street. The main difference is that instead of creating a single point, we will have to create a LineString over the specific street we want to rename.
