Retina - HiDPI tiles
This article explains the difference between 256x256 pixels tiles and HiDPI/Retina tiles. Also, you will learn when to use HiDPI/Retina instead of default 256x256 pixel tiles.
HiDPI/Retina tiles are available in MapTiler Engine Plus, Pro and Enterprise editions.
Introduction
By default, MapTiler Engine creates 256x256 pixels tiles. However, as more end-users of tiled maps use high-resolution screens on their laptops, cell phones, and tablets, there’s a growing demand for higher quality tiles.
If you aim to provide these users with a superior experience, consider employing HiDPI/Retina tiles in place.
HiDPI/Retina = Enhanced resolution
Both the default (256x256) and the HiDPI tiles cover the exact same geographical area and display the same content. Yet, the HiDPI version offers more pixels, resulting in a better resolution. Consequently, the lines appear thicker, and labels are bigger.
Enable HiDPI in MapTiler Engine
Follow these steps to generate high-resolution tiles:
1. Open your data in MapTiler Engine.
2. Click the “Export” button.
3. Select your desired output format.
4. On the following page, titled “Output settings”, check the “HiDPI/Retina tiles” option.
5. Begin the rendering process by hitting the “Render” button.
6. Upon completion, you’ll receive an output file with high-resolution tiles.
Conclusion
High-resolution HiDPI/Retina tiles are especially suitable, if your end users have high-resolution devices (e.g. iPhone, iPad, MacBook, 4K+ screens).
