Get a map without attribution

The map attribution must be present on every map, as outlined by our Terms and Conditions. But what if you need a clean map, for example for use in videos? Removing the attribution is legally possible if you adhere to the rules explained on this page.

Remove MapTiler attribution

Our map attribution consists of several parts. The MapTiler-branded parts are the MapTiler logo and the © MapTiler text with link. Here’s how to remove them:

  • The logo is only mandatory for free users. So, to be eligible to remove it, simply upgrade to any of our paid plans. Maps implemented with MapTiler SDK JS detect the license and the logo gets removed from your map automatically.

  • The © MapTiler link is mandatory for all users. To remove it, you need written permission. Please contact our Sales team to arrange it.

Remove OSM attribution

The © OpenStreetMap link is another mandatory part of our map attribution. You can only remove it if your map doesn’t contain any data protected by the OpenStreetMap (OSM) license. The steps below help you update your map to use only non-OSM data.

1. Select a compatible map

Removing the OSM attribution requires you to replace the main map data source, which is OSM-based, with an alternative one. You can do that in our visual map design editor.

However, some maps use more than one data source, and these additional datasets may contain OSM data too. They cannot be replaced, so you need to select a map without them. The following maps are safe to use:

You can also use a custom map derived from these map styles. Just make sure the map hasn’t been enriched with any OSM-based content.

2. Replace map data source

All our maps use the same main OSM-based dataset: MapTiler Planet. We provide another global dataset as an OSM-free alternative: MapTiler Planet Lite. To remove the OSM attribution, you need to switch your map’s main data source from MapTiler Planet to MapTiler Planet Lite.

Note that MapTiler Planet Lite, as the name suggests, is “light”, meaning it contains much less data. The maximum zoom level is 10 (for MapTiler Planet it’s 15). This is fine for showing global context on the level of countries and larger administrative units, but not for detailed maps.

How to switch to Planet Lite

  1. In your MapTiler account, page Maps, select one of the compatible maps and click on Customize a copy. (If you’ve already customized the map, you’ll be able to Customize it directly, without creating another copy.)

  2. In the map editor, select Data sources in the left menu.

  3. Right-click on the MapTiler Planet data source and select Replace.

    Replace MapTiler Planet data source

  4. In the new window, search for MapTiler Planet Lite and select it. You’ll get a comparison of the two data sources for your current map view. MapTiler Planet Lite contains less detail, which is visible on higher zoom levels, so you may need to zoom in to your area of interest to see any difference. The screenshot below shows an example on zoom level 11.

    Compare data sources

  5. In most maps, you’ll get a warning that the replacement will affect some style layers in your map, because the new data source doesn’t contain data for them. This is expected, so confirm the replacement and then proceed to Delete these layers.

    Remove layers with missing data

  6. Save and Publish the map under a name of your choice.

Your map now contains no OSM data, and you’re eligible to use it without the © OpenStreetMap attribution in videos, print, on the web, or in games. If you’re using MapTiler SDK JS to implement the map, the SDK detects the source dataset and removes the OSM attribution automatically.
