Custom extracts
This tutorial explains the basics of the Custom extracts tool in MapTiler Data.
Download a map of your own defined area
Custom extract allows you to download an area that is too different than area(s) from our standard datasets - e.g. it is a border area around a tripoint of three big countries or a small area. For bigger areas or regular updates, we recommend using the Production package which will reduce your cost.
To serve the map data, we advise using the MapTiler Server software.
The map tiles could be shrinked - features that are not necessary for your map style could be cut out to improve the map performance.
How to use the Custom extracts tool
- Drag the map to find the area you are interested in. Alternatively, you can use the “Find a place…” field to navigate directly to the place you want to request.
- Draw a rectangle using the Ctrl+mouse drag (Cmd+mouse drag on Mac) over the area you want to download.
- Check what exactly you are downloading.
- Click on the Purchase button.
- Fill in your billing information.
- In the Data user interface, see the My downloads page - first, you can find your non-processed request in the Waiting tab, later the data ready for download in the Processed tab, and at the end in the Downloaded tab for the record. You will be notified by an email (with a download link) sent to the address associated with your account once the extract is ready for download, alternatively, you can check regularly here if the extract moved from the Waiting stage into the Processed stage.
- Download it from the Processed tab and start using it, ideally with MapTiler Server.
User interface
Under the standard header, you can find the screen divided into two parts - on the left side, there is the config menu, on the right side, is the map where you define the area you want to download.
In the config menu, you can select:
- Dataset - you can choose between “street” data from OpenStreetMap, Contour lines, Hillshade, and Satellite.
- Selected area - the area you are downloading in a form of a bounding box - you can change the bounding box coordinates here
- Zoom levels - you can change the zoom levels you are requesting. The fewer zoom levels you request, the lower the price is.
- Optimize for a GL style - if you upload a map style, the service will cut out unnecessary features from the map and you will download only the features you need for your map. This will make your map loading faster.
