Edit your vector data

This page belongs to a tutorial that explains how to use our Vector data editor to create custom vector features (points, lines, polygons) and how to add these features to a map.

1. Create a vector data file 👉 2. Add and edit features 👉 3. Use the dataset

To get the features you need, you can create them manually or via search, move existing ones, edit their properties, and merge them with other datasets.

Add properties

To enable detailed information and interactions with the features, specific properties need to be added:

  1. Go to the Settings panel Alt/⌥ + 3.
  2. Press the + icon to add each property.

Add features manually

1. Switch to the Features panel Alt/⌥ + 2. 2. Select the appropriate tool for creating features. There are multiple tools available:

  • Points Alt/⌥ + O
  • Lines Alt/⌥ + L
  • Polygons Alt/⌥ + P

3. Select the desired feature on the map and input the corresponding information for the properties.

In addition to creating geometries from scratch, you can search for and add features to a dataset from our geocoding database.

The editor is also able to add items from search results. It is a great and powerful feature that lets you add new vector objects to your map just by searching for existing points, lines, or polygons (such as municipality districts). Here is how to do it:

1. Open the search (magnifying glass icon, top left).
2. Type in the keywords (name of a city, state, or a street…). 3. Select your desired item.
4. Click the little “+” plus sign on the item to add feature to dataset. Choose how to add it: Add polygon: Insert geometry as a boundary or a polygon. Add Multipoint: Insert geometry as multiple points. Add LineString or MultiLineString: Insert geometry as a line / series of lines. Add point: Insert the center point of the geometry into the map. 5. Label your newly added feature as needed.

When you add a polygon, the system automatically calculates its area and center point (length and center point in case of lines), and the feature’s name is saved as a property. Only the coordinates and the name are saved if you add a point.

Add features from file

To add existing vector data to your working file, open it directly from the vector editor using the hamburger menu ≡ in the top right corner of the editor. In a blank data file, you’ll get the option to Import file, otherwise you’ll be able to Append data.

Save and publish

When you’ve finished editing the features, Save and Publish the file. This gets your dataset ready for integration in publicly available maps and applications.

Next step

With your new dataset saved and published, you can go ahead and add the features to your map!
